Palermo Airport is an airline hub for Ryanair, Volotea, and Wizz Air.
History of Falcone Borsellino Airport
In 1985, GESAP S.p.a. was established. Until 1994, it operated exclusively as a manager and supplier of ground handling services for Falcone Borsellino Airport. The said management was directly assigned by Palermo's government and supervised by the District Airport Directorate.
The airport was named Falcone Borsellino in remembrance of the two ruling anti-mafia magistrates, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. The Sicilian Mafia murdered them in 1992.
A 1.90 meter and 6 feet by 3 inches in diameter plaque with Borsellino and Falcone's portraits are displayed at one of the entrance gates to the departure hall. The plaque was created by the Sicilian sculptor Tommaso Geraci. It bears the Giovanni Falcone–Paolo Borsellino–Gli Altri–L'orgoglio della Nuova Sicilia.
In 1994, GESAP was assigned by the preceding management of the airport through a convention that vested the company with a 20-year mandate to rule landside activities, including the airport buildings and surrounding areas).
In April 1999, GESAP obtained an anticipated authorization to manage the airport's airside movements, specifically the flight infrastructures such as runways, links, taxiways, and aprons, as foreseen by art. 17 L. 135/97.
GESAP, as an airport management company, projects, develops, manages the airport's areas, infrastructures, and systems, ensuring the necessary maintenance and implementation.
It also provides centralized services such as airport coordination, public information systems, security controls, surveillance, and handling retail outlets through concessions to third parties.
In April 2004, GESAP awarded UNI ISO 9001/2000 (Vision 2000) certification. The company already received certification for its services in the handling sector, also renewed by TÜV in December 2006.
On May 30, 2004, Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile (ENAC), also known as Italy's National Agency for Civil Aviation, awarded GESAP a certificate, recognizing the airport's full cooperation with the regulations for the construction and management of airports.
On May 24, 2007, GESAP obtained the renewal of the airport certificate until May 30, 2010.
Today, GESAP is awaiting a ministerial decree that will give them a forty-year privilege for the total management of the airport. This comes after ENAC's board of directors deliberating on March 1, 2005, officialized in a convention signed on November 17, 2006.
In June 2005, Eurofly ventured and launched seasonal flyings from Palermo to New York City through Airbus A330s. The company later tied up with Meridiana in creating Meridiana Fly, which persisted in operating the transatlantic service. However, due to the airline's decision to rebrand as Air Italy, the route ended in October 2017.
